Description

In the heart of the Castelli Romani, just 25 kilometers southeast of the center of the Italian capital, lies the Colonna winery, representing the original core of the Pallavicini family's wine production. Today, it covers a total of approximately 80 hectares, including 65 hectares of vineyards, with 50 hectares dedicated to white grapes and 15 hectares to red grapes. The estate also boasts 4,000 ancient olive trees of the Leccino, Frantoio, Moraiolo, Carboncella, Rosciola, and Itrana varieties. The vineyards are predominantly situated on hilly terrain, ranging from 100 to 300 meters in elevation, facing southwest, with calcareous, clayey, and well-drained soils. The estate comprises three parts: Colonna, Pasolina, and Marmorelle.

The Vineyards

The age of the vines varies between 7 and over 70 years. The training system is divided (Guyot and Cordone speronato), and the planting density ranges from about 4000 vines per hectare for white grapes to 5000/7000 vines per hectare for red grapes.

The predominant white grape varieties include Malvasia Laziale, Malvasia di Candia, Trebbiano Toscano, Greco, Grechetto, Bombino, but there are also small plots with innovative and international varieties such as Chardonnay, Incrocio Manzoni, Traminer, Riesling, Semillon Blanc, and Falanghina.

On the surrounding, well-structured soils with medium depth and a high percentage of lapilli, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and especially Cesanese are cultivated, suitable for varietal winemaking.

The New Winery

For the white and red wines, a new winery with funnel-shaped "Lem" tanks was built, where each plot is vinified separately to recognize the characteristics and potential of each of the estate's 90 hectares of vineyards. The goal is to enhance the quality of all wines, with a special focus on native grape varieties such as Malvasia Puntinata and Cesanese. Finally, the entire wine range has been revised, and the packaging has been changed.
